Cheap "IPTV" subscriptions and streaming apps promise thousands of TV channels, pay-TV packages, movies, and live sports for a fraction of the regular price. What many don't know: those who use such obviously illegal offers are not operating in a harmless gray area, but are generally committing a legal violation – with potential civil and criminal consequences.

Why illegal IPTV streaming is risky

Streaming from an obviously illegal source creates copies on the device that – unlike normal browsing – are not covered by the copyright exception for temporary reproductions. The European Court of Justice clarified this in 2017 (Judgment "Filmspeler", C-527/15). Therefore, simply watching such streams can constitute copyright infringement.

This can result in:
